Energy Recovery

Wastewater contains energy and heat that could be used as a sustainable source of energy in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Among the possibilities are the use of residual heat for local heating systems, and the use of sludge to generate biogas and electricity.

The NEREUS partners have set up several democases to investigate and demonstrate the possibilities of energy recovery. Their aim is two-fold:

  • assessing the technical solutions at hand, with a focus on quantity and value of recovered energy, building and maintenance costs ...
  • raising awareness about and contributing to the social acceptance of relevant technologies.
